"Vitamin C and Whataburger"

In less than a year since I first heard of the Dirty River Boys, they have moved their way up into the top 15 or so of my favorite bands. They are so different from everybody else in the Texas music scene and it is a breath of fresh air. Well, I don't know how fresh they actually smell, but they're music is the shiz.

I stole this video from Rita, but I has to re-post it because I love it so much. I agree with her that "She" is my favorite song. It's not your typical "She's Like Texas" cliche let's-describe-every-woman-in-the-world song. So of course I love it. And it says the f-word in the chorus so it can never be played on radio so that makes me like it even more because ajillion other people won't find it and make it their Facebook status and beat the dead horse until I don't like it anymore like so many other songs (uhh, 6 Market Blvd. anyone??).

Anyway, last week I was in Branson on a mission trip with my family and some other families from my hometown church and my preacher's daughters did.not.know what bluegrass was. What the what?? So I promptly played them some DRB because I figured that was the best way to ease them into it. I'm still not sure if they liked it or not because I know they probably only listen to mainstream music so this was way weird for them, but I had to take my chances. I don't let people go uncultured by my music. I force it down throats every chance I get. :)

So, here is this neato video that shows a little bit of the life of the Boys...

Obsessed with Turnpike Troubadours

Uh oh... here I go again on a MAJOR binge. Just when I need to be packing and doing laundry (I've got about 4 hours to do that) I got sucked in. I heard the new Turnpike Troubadours song early yesterday morning for the first time. It isn't often that a song completely sweeps me off my feet. I mean, there are good songs that I freak out over and love, but this new song is incredible. Maybe because it took me by surprise, I didn't even know they had a CD coming out soon, but this song is amazing.

It's no secret that Evan Felker is one of the best songwriters in Texas, but the band itself is outstanding as well. Now combine the two and you've got gold. These guys blew everyone away in 2011 and I have no doubt they will continue that streak in 2012 with their new album coming out in May (yes, it's on my calendar!!).

I got to see them back in November and it was one of the best shows I've ever been to. I was (as usual) glued to the stage for most of the night. They have such a good energy on stage and even if you don't know their songs, you walk away a huge Turnpike fan.

I started looking online for their new songs and all I could find are a few live recordings but then I discovered a plethora of songs I had never heard so I make a YouTube playlist and stayed up way too late last night trying to get my fix. Then I woke up this morning craving it again, so here I am, trying to get it out of the way so I can tend to other stuff.

Anyway, here is what I've been listening to this morning:

And here is their new song in full:

And here's another one. I like this video better. You can't hear it as well, but the live atmosphere can't be beat in my opinion.

Do you smell a TCMC number 1?? I know I do.

Kip Moore's Super-Country-Country-Song "Somethin' 'Bout A Truck" Checklist

This round of "My Super-Country Country Song Checklist" is brought to you in part by Smirnoff Ice Strawberry Acai flavor.

Today we will be analyzing newcomer Kip Moore's new country single, "Somethin' 'Bout A Truck."
I'm super excited about this one because any song with that many dialect apostrophes in the title is already a winner in my book!

Here is the official music video:

This video is STEAMY! I already like it because it is in the country, he drives a pickup like mine and he is picking up his girl from a rickety old house. I bet she lives there. Pretty country people always live in rickety old white houses with wrap-around porches. Well, I didn't grow up in the country, but based on all the other country music videos on CMT, I am making my assumption.

I would like to climb up on that hood and take a nap with Kip, I bet it is comfy. I wonder if Kip chats online with hot babes all day? I must say, that girl in the red sundress is a total country badass as well because she can open a beer with her teeth! How impressive.

And he must be a good boyfriend because he made sure to have beer for himself, and light girly beer for her. By the way, she sure does lots of booty grabbin'!

Can you blame her? I mean, he totally looks like a young Darryl Worley .

The comments on this video are nothing more than a bunch of passionate music fans using excessive curse words and I'm guessing they are all in 3rd grade based on their use of grammar. They definitely haven't taken Ms. Chadwick's 7th grade language arts class yet!

Anyway, on with the checklist. How country IS Mr. Moore? Let's find out!!

References:

[x] Beer
[] Whiskey
[] Smoking
[] Chicken
[x] Corn
[] Boots
[] Jeans
[x] Daisy Dukes/sundress
[] Cowboy hat / ‘ol’ ball cap’
[] Dirt/Back Roads
[xx] Fields, ’Sticks,’ Country, River etc.
[] Tractors
[] Fighting
[x] Trucks
[] Huntin’
[] Fishin’
[] Mama and/or Daddy

Uses terms:
[] Hick
[] Redneck
[] Country boy/girl
[] Hillbilly
[] Outlaw
[] Blue-collar

Name Drops:
[] Willie Nelson
[] Waylon Jennings
[] Hank Williams 1, 2 or 3
[] Johnny Cash (Man in Black)
[] Merle Haggard
[x] Jesus, The Good Lord, etc

BONUS:
[] Rapping
[] Talking/spoken work through end of song

This was a little disappointing! While the lyrics could have been country-er, the tune could not have been any catchier! Also, the video made up for it. If that counted, we would have added boots, jeans, backroads, ol' ballcap and many more.

Unfortunately, those things don't factor in, so for Kip's first checklist grade, he is receiving a:

D for overall countryness.

Sorry Kip!! Check a few more off this list next time and I'm sure you'll be up to a passing average in no time!!

Song of the Day: Baby When You're Blue

Here lately I've been listening to lots of random stuff, no real obsessions have taken me over in a while. I have just had my iPod on Texas Country shuffle or the radio and even a little Pandora on my Band of Heathens station. So, I've been able to think of tons of songs to use for my song of the day without repeating the same bands over and over.

Here is one from a local guy who is fixing to get real huge, I gotta feeling. He went pretty far in the last Billy Bob's contest and even won the Blue Light singer/songwriter contest a few years ago. There isn't a single song of his that I don't absolutely love. When this one just came on the radio, I knew I had to post it.

Happy Texas Independence Day!

Happy Texas day y'all!

I wouldn't be the Arrogant Texan if I didn't post something on Texas Independence Day!!! I have been a little out of the loop in the blog world, but that is because I have been too sucked into The Hunger Games to pay attention to the rest of the world at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo the past few days and I have been so busy!

There are so so SO many songs about Texas out there so it's hard for me to pick just one, but it's late and I have some other stuff to do still tonight, so all I feel like posting is some King George. I normally would post some cliche Texas song by a Texas artist, but why not listen to some Texas royalty on a holiday like this? Plus, this song kinda says it all and it was cool before songs about Texas were cool.
